The Ministry of Sound is a nightclub in London which was inspired by New York’s Paradise Garage. It was conceptualised by DJ Justin Berkmann who wanted to create back then a first club devoted to American house music scenes in of New York, Chicago and Detroit. Justin Berkmann together with James Palumbo and Humphrey Waterhouse brought the concept to life with the venue in a disuse bus garage. Ministry of Sound opened its doors on September 21, 1991 and quickly grew popularity as a clubbing venue from there. Ever since is started, it has become one of the famous and most successful nightclub in world, most recently ranking 4th in the DJ Mag top 100 clubs poll 2010.
Today, the club remains at the forefront of the global dance music scene; it has grown to almost completely take over the club/techno/dance scene. DJ’s play different set of music genres on different days of the week. Popular DJ’s like Sasha, Erick Morillo, Pete Tong and David Guetta, to name a few, play techno and electronic music on a Saturday which is Ministry of Sound’s long-standing Saturday Sessions.
The Ministry of Sound has since evolved to be a global dance music lifestyle brand. It has 2 nightclubs operating in London and Egypt, offices in London, Sydney, Berlin and New York, digital media businesses, has been licensed for use on a range of lifestyle products (clothing, luggage, fragrances) and is one of the largest independent record companies in the world. Its record label was established in 1995 and the first album released was The Annual 1995 which was mixed by Boy George and Pete Tong.
